Made in Italy: DENHAM x Candiani
For 10 years, DENHAM and Candiani have worked in close collaboration to master the art of vintage replication, striking the right balance between tradition and modernity.
History of Candiani
Founded in 1938 near Milan, Italy, Candiani Denim is one of the most well respected and sustainable fabric mills in the world. A family-run business, the Candiani name stands for premium quality and innovation. The mill is committed to working with sustainable ingredients — like organic and recycled cotton — and developing ecologically friendly dyeing and wash technologies.
Golden Rivets (Rivetto D’Oro)
Golden rivets (or “rivetto d’oro” in Italian) are seal of premium quality; they are only used on jeans that have been made with denim from the Candiani Mill. Candiani has selected a limited number of jean makers worldwide who are entrusted to use these rivets, and DENHAM is one of them.
Golden rivets symbolise Candiani’s core values: made in Italy, innovation and sustainability.
Founder and Chief Creative Officer
“Candiani is at the forefront of denim innovation. The factory is so inventive it’s mind-blowing — it’s like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with all of the latest technology.”
Sustainability: "The Greenest Mill in the Blue World"
Since 1938, Candiani has shared a close relationship with its environment and community. As the mill is located in a nature reserve park, it has particularly strict restrictions to uphold in terms of pollution, recycling and social sustainability.
Candiani is committed to continually reducing its use of natural resources and overall environmental impact. Some examples include:
- Recycling: yarn waste from the spinning, warping and dyeing departments are shredded and recycled into new fabric.
- Facilities: designed with strategic engineering to optimise sustainable technology.
- Ingredients: use only 100% organic cotton, and source 35% of cotton from the Better Cotton Initiative.
- Technology: develops and patents new technologies for each area of the denim production cycle (spinning, dyeing, weaving, finishing).
Technologies & Innovations
The in-house Candiani Development Centre is constantly developing new technologies, with the goal to give you the best-looking product in the most sustainable way. Some of their amazing developments include:
Candiani has pioneered “N Denim,” the cleanest and most eco-friendly dyeing technology on the market. “N” stands from nitrogen, which accelerates the penetration of indigo into the yarns. As a result, the fabric can undergo fewer indigo baths; it saves up to 33% of water and 50% of chemicals that are typically used in dyeing processes. Plus, the resulting product has a deeper and stronger dye to it.
This sustainable dyeing technology keeps indigo application light on the yarn, but without increasing the ‘crocking’ (when dye rubs off fabric onto skin). As a result, once the fabric is washed, it only takes a small amount of water and energy to wash-down the indigo.
This patented technology uses extracts from recycled shrimp shells to dye yarn. It’s a natural, 100% organic polymer that doesn’t pollute the water used to dye or finish denim. “It’s probably the strongest and most tangible sustainable innovation in terms of dyeing, in the last 10 years,” says Alberto Candiani. In addition to being 100% biodegradable, it saves chemicals, water and energy. Only Candiani is using this technology.
Candiani’s stretch fabrics are created through innovative blends of fibres, yarns and elastomers, allowing for up to 60% elasticity and a soft, natural touch. The fabrics still retain a high recovery, so over time your jeans won’t bag out or lose their shape.
